City Roads and Dasara: Some suggestions

Sir,

Apropos to the recent news item in Star of Mysore titled “City roads await Dasara for salvation,” it is a happy news for every Mysurean that finally our roads which are badly damaged and lying neglected since the past 8-9 months would hopefully get repaired. But I would like to suggest and bring to the notice of our elected representatives and the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) authorities the following points:

1. Focus first on repairing the roads which need immediate attention, those that are barely motorable. Rather than focusing only on roads along the Jumboo Savari route or the ones where tourists roam, a holistic survey should be carried out where roads used to maximum extent by daily city commuters which are in horrible state should be identified and repaired first.

2. Focus on all localities of the city for carrying out road repair works sans petty politics. Prominent roads in each locality or connecting roads should be the priority.

3. Ensure that the quality of work undertaken is good. We don’t want roads that can barely last till next year given the copious rainfall this year and probably the next year too.

4. Use newer and more durable technology for road construction instead of the usual bitumen (tar) which are not very costly. Consult experts in the field if needed.

We saw how the recent visit of our PM gave a good facelift to roads along his route. Let’s hope this Dasara will be a boon for all roads of our city and its citizens rather than only being a eyewash to the tourists.
