City schools already have ‘No Bag Day’

Mysore: Much ahead of the Department of Primary and Secondary Education issuing a circular stating that every third Saturday of a month must be observed as a ‘No Bag Day’, certain schools in Mysuru have already put this system into practice.

Speaking to Star of Mysore, Principal of Vijaya Vittala School S.P. Asha said that they have been following this since the last two years and every Second Saturday is a ‘No Bag Day’. “In fact, we are deliberating on making every Saturday as a ‘No Bag Day’ and expand the existing creative, art, craft, sports activities for students,” she said.

Dr. L Savitha, Senior Principal and Secretary of Kautilya Vidyalaya said that such a system has already been implemented at the school.

“Saturdays usually are meant for Scouts, physical education, Spoken English, sports and other activities. On those days, we encourage a lot of creative and scholastic activities and we have Atal Tinkering Lab for skill development and to develop scientific knowledge.

K.G. Mathew, Principal of Excel Public School said that as a policy, the school does not encourage students to carry school bags. “We have dedicated places in classrooms for students to keep their bags and books. Also, Saturdays are meant for creativity and sports. We also have a good cafeteria where we give lunch and pure drinking water, eliminating the need of students carrying food and water from homes,” he said.
