City student wins State-level URSC, ISRO scientific presentation contest

December 16, 2025

Mysore/Mysuru: B. Ganavi, a Class 8 student of Excel Public School (EPS), Mysuru,  has secured first prize in the prestigious “Kishora Kammata – Scientific Presentation Competition in Kannada,” organised by U.R. Rao Satellite Centre, Indian Space Research Organisation (URSC, ISRO), Bengaluru, as part of Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations.

The State-level contest saw participation from 18 shortlisted schools across Karnataka, with students presenting scientific concepts linked to satellite technology.

Presenting on the Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics, Ganavi explained the scientific principle of thermal equilibrium and temperature measurement entirely in Kannada. Her presentation covered the origin of the law, its real-world applications in temperature regulation and its relevance in satellite thermal control systems, including how engineers manage extreme heat variations between the sun-facing and shadow sides of spacecraft.

She also demonstrated the concept through a live experiment using hot and cold water, glass tumblers and thermometers to illustrate how two systems reach thermal equilibrium.

Following her presentation, the EPS contingent visited the Large Space Simulation Chamber (LSSC) at URSC, where students were exposed to live mission analysis environments and interacted with senior scientists.

Ganavi’s preparation for the competition was supported through weeks of structured mentoring by the school’s Astronomy and Science teams.

Under the able guidance of M.B. Mahesh (STEAM Coordinator, Astronomy and Amateur Radio Club Incharge), Mahesha (Kannada Teacher and Academic Coordinator), Bhavya (Math Teacher) and David Rakshith Raj (Social Science Teacher), she refined her subject understanding, experimental demonstration and scientific communication, emerging as one of the youngest finalists to secure top honours.

K.G. Mathew, Principal, EPS, said, “Ganavi’s accomplishment at the Scientific Presentation Competition is a moment of immense pride for the entire Excel Public School community. From explaining a core physics principle in Kannada to engaging directly with senior URSC, ISRO scientists, her journey reflects what young learners can achieve with the right guidance and a supportive environment.

The Kishora Kammata Scientific Presentation Competition, conducted annually by URSC, ISRO, aims to strengthen scientific communication among students and deepen awareness of fundamental principles used in satellite technology.

‘A dream come true’

Speaking to Star of Mysore on her feat, Ganavi said, “It still feels unbelievable to have presented at URSC, ISRO and won first place. Explaining science in Kannada on such a big platform is a dream come true. The interactions with URSC, ISRO scientists were truly inspiring. The entire experience has strengthened my dream of exploring space science in future and I am deeply grateful to my teachers and to Excel Public School for supporting and guiding me at every step.”
