City’s Somashekar Gowda receives ‘Gem of India’ award

Pioneer in breeding and distribution of Guppy fish

Social Activist V.S. Somashekar Gowda,  who is actively involved in breeding and  distribution of Guppy fish which are an excellent remedy to check the growth of mosquitoes responsible for spreading deadly disease has been honoured by presenting the ‘Gem of India’ award at the All India Conference of achievers held in New Delhi recently.

Guppy fish can control diseases like Malaria, Chikungunya, Zika and Dengue by feeding on the larvae of mosquitoes responsible for the spread of the said diseases. Somashekar Gowda has created awareness among people on Guppy fish in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Maharashtra, Goa, Delhi and also has covered Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and Nepal. His relentless service for 22 years has fetched him the coveted award.

Somashekar Gowda established Karwar Development and Service Centre and got the beach thoroughly cleaned. He was actively involved in protecting animals and serving the education sector by establishing a study circle. He lent a helping hand to victims of Tsunami in Tamil Nadu and  quake victims in Gujarat. He has so far distributed about 15 lakh Guppy fish free to public.

Somashekar Gowda has won the State Rajyotsava award, Acharya Sri Vidyaranya award from Himalaya Foundation, National award for Integration & Public Service from Kerala and                                                                 Samaja Seva Rathna award from Karnataka Samskruthika Academy.

Sharing his happiness here recently at a press meet, he said that people from far off places were seeking Guppy fish and regretted that awareness had not picked up as expected in Mysuru district.
