Collecting ‘Maakali Beru’ from Hanur forest area: Six arrested

35-kg roots and two snares seized

Hanur: The Forest Department staff have arrested six persons for illegally trespassing into Eramod on CPT 81 Bijjalane Beat in Koudalli Range and collecting Maakali Beru (Decalepis hamiltonii), a root with medicinal properties. Those arrested are Kutty of Alambadi, Arul, Charles, Bala, Arogya Mary and Teresa of Biligundla in Tamil Nadu. 

The Forest staff have recovered 35 kg Maakali Beru stuffed in two sacks and have also seized two snares from them.

The Forest Department has registered a case under Sections 9, 27, 29, 31 and 39 of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 and the accused have been remanded to Judicial custody. Koudalli Range Forest Officers and staff took part in the operation.
