The Mayor’s Gold Cup Kabaddi Tournament 2017 conducted by the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) jointly in association with Karnataka State Kabaddi Association & Mysuru Zilla Kabaddi Association got off to a colourful start at the Chamundi Vihar Indoor Stadium yesterday.
The tournament was inaugurated by District in-Charge Minister Dr. H.C. Mahadevappa by lighting the traditional lamp. Speaking on the occasion, Mahadevappa welcomed all the players to the heritage city of Mysuru and wished them a pleasant stay. He said that traditional games like Kabaddi should be encouraged more in order to bring out more mofussil talents into limelight and such tournaments are opportunity for the players to show their talent.
The matches are being played under floodlights in two Kabaddi courts which were watched by number of kabaddi buffs who had turned out in large number.
Teams participating in the men’s section: Vijaya Bank, Central Excise & Customs, SBI, Mandya, Mysuru, BYS (B’luru), Chikkamagalur, Amruth (B’luru), Keshava (B’luru), Delhi, Hi-Tech (Chennai), Ujre (SDM), J.K. Academy (Kerala), Ramnagara, Classic National (B’luru) and HMT Colony Boys.
In the women’s section Palam (Delhi), Matha KC, Shanmugha Trust, Coimbatore, Central Railways, Dharwad, South Central Railways, Maharashtra State Police, Best & Company (TN) and Mysuru will be vying for the championship. The matches are played on a league-cum-knock-out basis. A total of five matches (three in the men’s and two in the women’s section) were held on the inaugural day of the tournament.
Mayor Ravikumar, MLA Vasu, MCC Commissioner G. Jagadeesha, former Mayors, Corporators, Members of Karnataka State Kabaddi Association and Mysore District Kabaddi Association members were present.
Mandya score exciting win over Amruth
In a keenly contested inaugural match in the men’s section, Mandya help by some inspiring play by raider Raghavendra (14 points) and combined with some good defence registered an exciting 35-34 win over Amruth, Bengaluru. At half-time, Mandya and Amruth were level 11-11. Nishant (12 points) played well for Amruth, Bengaluru.
In the second league match, Ramnagara scored a convincing 49-35 win over Chikkamaglur. Nitesh excelled for Ramnagara with his raids and scored 16 points. Arun Kumar excelled with his defence and catching. At half-time the winners led 25-13. Dinesh (12 pts) and Mahesh (8 pts) played well for Chikkamaglur. In the final men’s section match of the day, HMT Colony Boys, Bengaluru beat JK Academy, Kerala 37-31.
Women’s section
The inaugural match in the women’s section saw, Dharwad beat Best & Company (TN) 37-21. Sumit Mondal (8 pts) and Sumit Bidri (6 pts) played well for the winners. Mythili and Karpagavalli played well for the losing team. At half-time the Dharwad led 18-10. In the second match, Shanmugha Trust, Coimbatore scored a 35-25 win over Maharashtra State Police team. Swetha (14 pts) and Sathyapriya (12 pts) impressed for the Coimbatore while Aruna Sawant (14 pts) excelled for the Maharashtra Police women’s team. At half-time the Shanmugha Trust led 22-16.
The second day’s matches will begin at the Chamundi Vihar Indoor Stadium at 5 pm today.
