Commonwealth Games – Day 6: Historic bronze in Squash & High-Jump, silver in Judo

It has been a great day for India at the CWG 2022 yet again. Judoka Tulika Maan won a silver medal in judo after going down to Scotland’s Sarah Adlington in +78kg final.

In the men’s singles squash, Saurav Ghosal defeated England’s James Willstrop to win India’s first singles medal (bronze) in the sport at the CWG.

In athletics, high-jumper Tejaswin Shankar took home bronze medal. This is the first high-jump medal by an Indian at the CWG. In weightlifting, Lovepreet Singh and Gurdeep Singh bagged a bronze medal each in men’s 109kg and 109+ kg categories respectively.

Now, India’s medal tally stands at 18 with 5 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze.

Boxers Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Nitu Ganghas (women’s 48kg) and Hussam Uddin Mohammed (men’s 57kg) advanced to semi-finals to assure India of 3 more medals. Olympic medallist boxer Lovlina Borgohain lost her light middle weight quarter-final & Ashish Kumar loses in men’s light heavyweight quarter-final.

The Indian women’s cricket team defeated Barbados to enter semi-finals. In hockey, the Indian women’s team progressed into the semi-finals with a 3-2 win over Canada in their last Pool A match. Also, the Indian men’s hockey team registered a dominating 8-0 win against Canada in a Men’s Pool B match.

In round 2 of the lawn bowls, Indian women’s pair of Lovely Choubey and Nayanmoni Saikia won their match 23-6, while Mridul Borgohain registered a superb 21-5 win in his men’s singles match. In women’s weightlifting 87+ kg category, Purnima Pandey finished sixth with a combined best lift of 228kg.
