Compensate the pothole accident victims

Sir,

Recently Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) made a public notification for awarding a reasonable compensation to the road accident victims, if the cause for such accidents are on account of potholes or poor condition of the roads and footpaths.

This is definitely a pro-public amendment by BBMP. Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) authorities can also implement this rule after amending the necessary rules to help such accident victims. It is an open secret that the un-holy nexus between the contractors, engineers and local Corporators result in execution of sub-standard civil works.

While issuing the road and footpath contract tender documents, MCC should incorporate stringent penalty clauses against execution of substandard civil works. There should be specific clauses to cover the compensation from the contractors, if it is proved that the cause for such an accident is due to sub-standard work executed by them.

After giving compensation to the accident victim, MCC should be able to get the funds recovered from the contractor and the supervising engineer team. This will not only create an accountability for the works executed on behalf of MCC, but will also result in execution of good quality works.
