Congress suffers setback as JD(S) candidate wins APMC top post

The ruling Congress suffered yet another jolt in the Chief Minister’s home district, with the JD(S) candidate winning the Mysuru taluk APMC President’s post in the election held yesterday.

JD(S) candidate Mavinahalli S. Siddegowda, who was elected from Jayapura seat bagged the President post, while Bandipalya Basavaraju of the Congress was elected Vice-President.

Mavinahalli Siddegowda pipped Congress candidate Savitramma Nanjappa to the post, after a Congress member cross voted in favour of the JD(S) candidate. Although the Congress had just enough members to bag the post, cross-voting by one of its members did the damage for the party.

Siddegowda, who secured 9 votes, was declared elected as President, with the Congress candidate Savithramma Nanjappa losing out by a single vote. As there was a secret ballot, the Congress members, who cross-voted in favour of the JD(S) candidate, could not be identified, it is learnt.

The Mysuru APMC is a 17-member body, with 14 elected members and 3 nominated members.

Tahsildar Ramesh Babu was the Returning Officer.
