Skill Development Prog. for Building Construction Workers

Mysuru: Assistant Commissioner for Labour Thammanna expressed his displeasure on construction workers for not actively participating in skill development training programmes.

He was speaking after distributing kits at the skill development training programme organised for registered building construction workers under Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Karmika Sahayahastha Scheme at Nirmithi Kendra in city on Friday.

The programme was organised jointly by Karnataka State Building Construction Workers Federation, Department of Labour, District Administration and Nirmithi Kendra for the benefit of construction labourers.

He said as many as 59,000 registered construction workers have been enrolled in the Department of Labour across the district and added: “The construction sector is witnessing rapid changes due to the advancement of technology and many other reasons. The construction labourers must upgrade their skills according to the latest development in the sector.”

“The Department is conducting a lot of skill development training programmes for improvement of their efficiency following advancement in construction sector. Shockingly, the building construction workers are not evincing any interest in improving their skills. The Department have to please the labourers to attend the training camp. This mindset of the labourers had worried the officials of the Department,”                   he said.

Thammana further said that the construction industry is second largest sector, after agriculture, that provided and created employment opportunities for people in the nation.

The Department has been arranging skill development training programme every month. Only 32 construction workers have undergone training in the first batch of training. The Department officials have to make all circuses to bring the construction workers to training in the second batch that commenced from Friday. The labourers must make use of the benefits provided by the government, he said.

Builders Association of India (BAI) office-bearer Subramanya, Mysuru Nirmthi Kendra Programme Director M.T. Manjunath, Engineer H.B. Satish, Labour Officer Geetha, Jayanna, Nikhil Chandra, UltraTech Cement representative M.R. Yogish and Yoga Instructor Sadashivananda were present during   the programme.
