Mobile phone, 10-gram ganja seized from inmate
Mysore/Mysuru: In the wake of recent seizures of narcotics and mobile phones inside Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, the State Government had ordered intensified inspections across all prisons. However, similar incidents continue to surface, with repeated cases now being reported from Mysuru Central Prison as well.
Despite strict directives issued by the Home Minister and the Director General of Prisons, breaches persist. Last month, during a surprise inspection at Mysuru Prison, officials found a SIM card concealed inside a toilet.
In the latest incident, contraband was recovered from Mandya Sub-Jail at Chamundeshwarinagar on Saturday. Reports said that unidentified miscreants hurled the items from outside the prison into the inner compound.
Acting on the information, prison staff searched Cell No. 4, occupied by an inmate identified as Naga, alias ‘Handi Naga.’ They recovered a ball wrapped in black tape. Upon opening it, officials found a mobile phone and about 10 grams of a substance suspected to be ganja.
CCTV footage shows that between 8.40 am and 9 am on Saturday, two unidentified persons arrived on a motorbike near the Sub-Jail and threw a packet over the main wall into the premises. Visuals confirmed that the packet landed inside the compound and was later picked up by the inmate from Cell No. 4.
Following the incident, Jail Officer Paramananda Haravala lodged a complaint at the Mandya West Police Station. A case has been registered.
Jail authorities are probing how the contraband was smuggled into the prison despite heightened security and who was behind the act.
