Cops deny journalists’ Palace entry despite valid passes

Journalists stage flash protest; MDJA, MLC seek action against errant Cops

Mysuru: The Mysuru District Journalists’ Association (MDJA) has condemned the alleged high-handed behaviour of Police personnel who prevented journalists from entering the Mysore Palace premises to cover Jumboo Savari, despite their carrying official media passes.

The Association demanded disciplinary action against the officers who humiliated senior journalists, attempted to assault them and obstructed them from discharging their duties.

It said journalists work tirelessly to bring Dasara coverage to the public, but inadequate arrangements during the Vijayadashami procession hampered their work. The issue has reportedly been brought to the attention of the Chief Minister’s Media Adviser and District Minister Dr. Yathindra Siddaramaiah.

Association President K. Deepak and General Secretary Dharmapura Narayan urged the authorities to take the matter seriously and ensure that such incidents do not recur during future Dasara celebrations.

MLC condemns misconduct

MLC K. Shivakumar has condemned the misbehaviour of Police towards journalists and demanded disciplinary action against them.

In a letter to the Chief Secretary and the DG&IGP, Shivakumar said, inadequate arrangements for media personnel had caused serious difficulties.

Traditionally, journalists were allowed to enter the Palace premises through the Karikallu Thotti gate. This year, the Police designated the Brahmapuri gate as the entry point.

However, personnel deployed there denied entry to journalists despite their carrying official duty passes issued by the Mysuru City Police Commissioner’s office and Department of Information and Public Relations, the MLC said.

Shivakumar said that journalists were accused of carrying fake passes and that Police attempted to assault a senior journalist. The incident prompted journalists to stage a protest at the spot, he said.
