Couple jailed for killing new-born in Nanjangud

Mysore/Mysuru: The 7th Additional District and Sessions Court has sentenced a woman to life imprisonment for killing her newborn baby and has also sentenced her lover to two years jail for throwing the baby’s body into a ditch.

Those sentenced are Mangalagowri of Hediyala village in Nanjangud taluk and her lover Basavaraju of Gowdarahundi village.

It is learnt that Mangalagowri and Basavaraju were lovers.  Mangalagowri then gave birth to a baby girl on May 8, 2017, out of wedlock.

Mangalagowri, after feeding the baby, banged the baby’s head against the wall, gagged its mouth with a cloth and killed the baby brutally. She then wrapped the baby’s dead body in a cloth and handed it over to her lover Basavaraju, who took the body and threw it into a ditch.

After the incident came to light, Hullahalli Police registered a case. Nanjangud Circle Inspector conducted investigation and submitted a charge-sheet to the Court.

Judge Saraswathi Kausundar found Mangalagowri guilty and sentenced her to life imprisonment besides imposing a fine of Rs. 5,000. The Judge also sentenced Basavaraju to two years imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 3,000 for disposing the dead body.
