Court reserves verdict on MLA Madal Virupakshappa’s bail plea

Bengaluru: The Special Court for prevention of Corruption Act cases here on Monday rejected the bail plea of KAS Officer Prashant Madal, son of Channagiri BJP MLA Virupakshappa Madal, who has been arrested with his father in an alleged graft case over award of contracts of KSDL (Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited)of which Madal Virupakshappa was the Chairman. The Court also reserved its order on Virupakshappa’s bail petition to Apr.15.

After their arrest in the case, both Virupakshappa and his son Prashant are in Judicial custody at Central Prison, Bengaluru. Prashant was trapped by the Lokayukta Police with an alleged bribe money of Rs.40 lakh in his father’s Crescent road residence, Bengaluru and arrested on Mar. 2. The trap was laid on the basis of a complaint. The Lokayukta Police in a raid later, had  seized Rs.6 crore cash from the residence of the MLA.

Virupakshappa’s Counsel contended that the house where Lokayukta cops had on the night of Mar.2 seized Rs.6 crore cash was not in his name and hence, the sitting MLA should not be held accountable for it. Opposing the bail, Public Prosecutor Santosh Nagarle argued that the room, from where the Rs.6 crore cash was seized, was used by Virupakshappa himself. The Judge upon hearing arguments and counter-arguments, reserved the verdict on Virupakshappa’s bail plea to Apr.15.
