Crochet Queens knit caps, cowls for soldiers

Mysuru: Mother India’s Crochet Queens (MICQ), Mysuru, are taking part in a huge project of donating warm cowls and caps to the brave soldiers facing extreme weather conditions at the borders. Around six women and a few students of a government school from Mysuru are contributing more than 130 sets towards this noble cause.

Addressing a press meet recently at the Pathrakartara Bhavan, MICQ  Area Coordinator Sharada C. Urs said that the cowls and caps are being knitted or crocheted in olive green and they plan to hand over to the Army in an event to be organised at the Army Camp in Ahmedabad on Nov.25.

According to Sharada Urs, the students of the Government Girls High School, T. Narasipur, became the first and only government school in India to participate in the third Guinness World Record (GWR). They have made 50 sets of cowls and caps.

This was made possible with the support of the Goodwill Ambassador of Karnataka Smitha Pratap who was instrumental in coordinating with the authorities of the school. The craft teacher of the school Anitha Jayaraman trained the students to crochet the items, she said.

MICQ breaks record: MICQ was conceived by Subashri Natarajan of Chennai, on Aug.1, 2015, with a vision to retrieve the art of crochet and an aim to break the previous Guinness World Record for the Largest Crochet Blanket which was 3,377 sq. metres. MICQ broke the record.

The blanket, made by more than 2,000 Indian women from all over the world, measured 11,148 square metres. On May 21, 2017, they set a Guinness World Record for the world’s longest crocheted scarf — 14,089 kms in total. Then came their hat-trick Guinness World Record break.

They broke the previous record of 13,348 crochet sculptures by 58,917 crochet sculptures, which is 4.5 times more than the previous one, in the Largest Display of Crochet 3D sculptures at SRM University campus, Chennai on Jan. 21, 2018. All the items made for these records were donated to various charities, she said.

After the hat-trick records, the women decided to work on a project which is not meant for any record but a totally selfless service to the Indian Army, “Return with thanks to Indian Brave Brothers,” she said.

Sharada Urs said that they were going to attempt their fourth GWR ‘Most people crocheting simultaneously’ in Jan. 2019, which will be held at the same time at various locations all over the country. Besides, in July 2019, they were planning their fifth GWR attempt. The concept for this attempt is ‘Christmas Nativity.’

MICQ is looking to revive the age old craft of crochet to its past glory and hence is welcoming more members into its fold. Those interested may contact on email: sharadacursmicq@gmail.com or on Mob: 9945365438.

MICQ members Ranjani and Tanuja and craft teacher Anitha Jayaraman were present at the press meet.
