Gold Coast: India’s Vikas Thakur today clinched a bronze medal in the Men’s 94 Kg weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games 2018 being held at the Gold Coast in Australia.
After a dramatic fight for Gold and Silver, Vikas had to be content with a bronze.
The Weightlifter from Ludhiana lifted a total weight of 351 Kg – 159 Kg in Snatch and 192 Kg in Clean and Jerk, to get the bronze medal.
Vikas was very impressive with his Snatch technique in his attempts. In the Clean and Jerk technique, Vikas managed to get a good lift but failed in the Jerks. He failed in his final attempt of the Clean and Jerk technique of 200 Kg. But it would have not mattered as Papua New Guinea’s Steven Kari lifted 216 KG in Clean and Jerk technique to bag the Gold medal while Canada’s Boady Santavy failed to lift 206 kg and settled for Silver. Vikas’s medal position takes India to a total of 8 medals in weightlifting in the ongoing Commonwealth Games. Vikas Thakur had earlier clinched a Silver medal in the Men’s 85 Kg weightlifting category at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.
