Mysuru: The Dakshina Kannada District Zilla Panchayat stall at Dasara Exhibition, set upon the theme ‘Stop running of water; make stagnant water soak’ has been attracting the visitors through its educative information on conservation of water.
The stall unveils the ZP CEO Dr. M.R. Ravi’s plans for conserving water and protecting Bio-diversity.
The stall features model exhibit of small check dams to prevent wasteful flow of water stream, rain water harvesting, conservation of water on foothills, increase in ground water levels, making water available for all seasons and other like models and exhibits.
The visitors to the stall are welcomed to coastal arts and culture, various forms of Yakshagana, Pisciculture and fishing, coconut and rubber farms, large sized picture of 17-year-old girl Tanvi Jagadish, a surfer of international repute and many such others.
The stall can be said to be covered with green as the nature’s flora and fauna is excellently displayed here. An exhibit that portrays three ‘Dharmikas’ standing amidst the greens seem to say that everyone is equal before nature and caste and creed comes into the picture only after coming out of it. This exhibit proposes to send a universal message that everyone should be part of nature.
Now coming to other exhibits at the stall, the one on waste management is very much informative. The exhibit based on the theme ‘our waste, our responsibility’, explains the importance of maintaining hygienity and cleanliness, reusable articles, bio-gas generation out of kitchen waste and disposal of household wastes. The exhibit of Anganwadi centres, goes out to explain natural architecture of Anganwadi Kendras of the past. A model on Anganwadi Kendra, built with tiled roof and wooden pillars, reminds one of the Kendras that existed in the past.
Maths Laboratory: The Education Department has set up a ‘Maths Laboratory’ model that is attracting young students. The exhibit aims to attract more and more number of students towards Mathematics which is considered as the queen of all Sciences and make learning Mathematics more easier.
Mini-Hydel Power Project: The Energy Department has built a model on mini-hydel power generation by using the gravitational force of water rolling down from the hills. The Department has also set up mini-exhibits on the different modes of hydel power generation.
The stall also features paintings of all rivers flowing in Western Ghats, waterfalls, all great personalities hailing from Dakshina Kannada District, coastal arts and culture and the District’s past and present glory.
The paints are drawn by artist Gopadkar and his Assistant Neenasam Gurumurthy. The stall was inaugurated by DK ZP CEO Dr. M.R. Ravi yesterday.
DK ZP President Meenakshi Shantigodu, ZP officers Umesh and Manjunath Hegde, KEA Chairman Siddaraju and others were present.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Ravi said that last year, two taluks of the district were declared drought-hit last year. But unfazed by the drought, the ZP went ahead with its plans of utilising water rolling from hills and hill ranges through mini check dams. Also the ZP executed ground water level improvement models, thus ensuring that drought didn’t make much impact on the district. The models and exhibits displayed at the stall is aimed at educating the public on water conservation and rain water harvesting, he said.
