Dasara Home Garden Competitions – 2023: His passion for greenery made him migrate from Haryana to Mysuru

October 22, 2023

Migration stories are often personal and rarely documented unless the individuals gain prominence in their new home or share their experiences publicly. However, it’s not uncommon for people to be drawn to different parts of India due to various factors, including personal interests, a desire for a change of scenery or new career prospects.

Dr. Ashwini Kumar Sachdeva migrated from Haryana to Mysuru, captivated by its lush greenery and the scenic landscapes of nearby areas such as Kodagu and Ooty, known for their pleasant climate. His residence in Gokulam 7th Main boasts a splendid garden adorned with more than 1,500 exotic plants, a variety of orchids and numerous ferns.

In addition to his home garden, Dr. Ashwini tends to fruit trees, including coconut and mango, at his farm located on Gaddige Road in Hemmanahalli village. A signboard outside his house aptly proclaims, “I may sleep in the house, but I live in the garden.”

His love for gardening was instilled by his mother and his connection with plants, nature, greenery and organic growth dates back to his early years, as he shared with Star of Mysore.

Dr. Ashwini pursued his MBBS degree in Kolar. His frequent visits to Kodagu and Mysuru deepened his admiration for the local climate and the splendid way plants flourished in the region. This led him to make the life-altering decision to move from Haryana to South India, which he did 12 years ago. He has never regretted his choice and his passion for gardening has earned him numerous accolades, including prizes in flower shows and garden competitions conducted by the Haryana Urban Development Authority.

An accomplished participant in Dasara flower show competitions, Dr. Ashwini has claimed several prizes in contests organised by the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA). In this year’s primary Dasara Flower Show Home Garden category, Dr. Ashwini has won the first prize and will receive the award on Oct. 26.

Mentioning exotic plants, Dr. Ashwini is an expert on bonsais which enhances the aesthetic value of homes. “Of course, the bonsais I have with me now are small and it takes years for them to grow. Bonsais are popular and expensive. The small plants that are made to grow into bonsais will cost thousands of rupees. Earlier, these would cost Rs. 20 or Rs. 30. Due to the popularity and demand, prices have sky-rocketed,” he said.

The ultimate goal of bonsai is to create a realistic depiction of nature. Bonsais requires extra care and the plants must be regularly trimmed and only then a good bonsai will form. “They require constant attention, trimming and a good bonsai depends on several factors such as species of the tree, size of the tree, size of the pot, time of year, soil-mixture and climate,” Dr. Ashwini added.
