The fact that construction of the track for organising Kambala during Dasara is already underway shows that the Karnataka Government is determined to go ahead with the event, despite serious concerns raised by a wide range of organisations, including Parisarakkaagi Naavu.
These organisations have raised concerns about the impact of Kambala on civic infrastructure and law and order, as well as the practical feasibility of holding such a large event in Mysuru.
They have also appealed to the Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to reconsider the decision (How can Mysuru hold 25 lakh Kambala fans? — Star of Mysore dated Sept. 9).
It may be pointed out that, over the years, a plethora of events have been added to Dasara. As a result, the solemnity, grandeur and significance of the festival and its pristine royal heritage appear to be gradually losing their importance.
Kambala is a traditional Tulu festival native to the coastal region and attempting to bring it to Mysuru appears insensitive. More importantly, from a practical point of view, managing such a huge gathering would be extremely difficult.
The authorities would also have to deal with the large quantity of garbage and debris that could be left behind after the event.
It may also be recalled that the Supreme Court had, at one stage, banned Kambala on grounds of cruelty to buffaloes, before the ban was subsequently lifted.
I hope wiser counsel will prevail and the Government will reconsider its decision to hold Kambala during Dasara in Mysuru.
