Mysuru: “Now-a-days man-made sources of the air pollution are industries, agriculture, power plants, automobiles, domestic sources,” said Environmentalist Alaknanda J. Adur, Coordinator of Sciences, Surana College, Bengaluru.
She was delivering a talk on “Air Pollution” as part of World Environment Day celebrations at the Institution of Engineers-India (IEI), Mysuru Local Centre, here recently and said, because of the increasing number of air pollutants, it has been divided into two types — primary pollutants and secondary pollutants.
Primary pollutants are those affecting the fresh air directly and emitted from smoke, ash, dust, fumes, mist, spray, inorganic gases, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, ammonia, nitric oxide.
Secondary pollutants are those affecting the air indirectly by chemical interactions to the primary pollutants and other atmospheric constituents such as sulphur-trioxide, ozone, hydrocarbons, nitrogen dioxide, etc, she said.
Trees give us the most needed tool for survival, which is oxygen. If humans do not save trees today, they might end up buying oxygen in bottles in future. Saving trees will reduce the effect of global warming.
Apart from human beings, even birds, animals and other creatures depend on trees for food and shelter. Saving trees will help save our ecosystem, she said.
She concluded with the message, “The only valuable asset that we can give our kids is a healthy environment. Save trees and give the future generation a greener planet to live.”
