Day-long Layavadyotsava at Ganabharathi on Sunday

Mysuru:  Ganabharathi has organised “Layavadyotsava,” a unique day-long festival in memory of Mahavidwan Palani Subrahmanya Pillai on Apr.22 (Sunday) at Veene Seshanna Bhavana in Kuvempunagar.

There are basically two schools of laya in the Karnatak classical percussion, the Pudukottai School and the Tanjavur School.  Palani Subrahmanya Pillai being a pole star in the realm of Laya belongs to the Pudukottai School.

The festival features lecture demonstrations and performances covering the nuances and the different dimensions of the Laya and percussion instruments. All the connoisseurs are invited to make use of this opportunity to know more about the aspects of laya. Inauguration of the fest is at 10 am followed by various sessions:

Puttaraju – Lecture demonstration on Dolu, 3.15 pm to 3.45 pm: Vid. P. Krishna Kumar (son of renowned Mridangam Maker  Parameshwara) – “Mridanga – perspective of the instrument maker,” 3.45 pm to 4.30 pm: Vid. H. L. Shivashankarswamy – “Usage of the percussion instruments in various musical forms,” 4.30 pm to 5.15 pm: Vid. Sukanya Ramgopal – “Manamadhurai Ghatam Making and its Fingering techniques,”  5.15 pm to 5.30 pm – Vid. V. S. Ramesh – “Morching and its playing techniques.”
