DC warns against supplying contaminated drinking water

No shortage of drinking water till Aug. 15:  MCC Commissioner

Mysore/Mysuru:  Deputy Commissioner (DC) Dr. K.V. Rajendra has warned the district officials that if drainage water is found in drinking water supplied to citizens, the concerned official will be held responsible and disciplinary action will be taken against him.

The DC gave this stern warning to officials at a meeting held at his Office in Siddarthanagar on Friday to discuss the availability of drinking water.

“The quality of drinking water must be inspected. Ensure that there is no chemical or bacteria in the drinking water supplied. Sumps and overhead tanks must be cleaned. Steps should be taken to ensure smooth flow of drainage water. If the drinking water supplied is found to be contaminated, the concerned official will be held responsible and disciplinary action will be taken against such officials,” said Dr. Rajendra.

‘Water levels in the reservoirs are decreasing because of shortfall in the expected quantity of rain,’ he said and asked the officials to take steps to ensure there is no scarcity of drinking water in the district.

Drinking water needs to be supplied to residents who come under the limits of 256 Gram Panchayats and 13 local bodies. Information about the availability of drinking water should be given daily, said the DC at the meeting and directed the Executive Engineer to be ready with a list of villages which may face shortage of drinking water.

Stating that there is no shortage of drinking water for the time being, Dr. Rajendra said that in case of any problem, private borewells should be hired to supply drinking water.  Also, make use of tankers to supply drinking water, advised the DC.

Mysuru City Corporation Commissioner G. Lakshmikantha Reddy told the meeting that KRS and Kabini water is not being given to agriculture purpose. Adequate water is being supplied in Mysuru city and despite shortage of rainfall, there will not be any problem to supply drinking water to citizens till Aug. 15, said the MCC Commissioner.

Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer K.M. Gayathri instructed officials to send drinking water samples to laboratories for testing and ensure they are free from bacteria and chemicals.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Kavita Rajaram, Rural Drinking Water Supply Depart-ment Engineer Suresh and other officials were present.
