Mysore/Mysuru: The recent death of a security guard while on duty at Open Air Theatre in Manasagangothri has triggered protests from trade unions (labour organisations) in city.

Following this, trade union leader Chandrashekar Meti has warned of intensifying the protest by staging overnight dharna and also filing a complaint with the Lokayukta on Varsity authorities for failing to provide justice to the family of the deceased security guard.

Addressing the press persons, at Pathrakarthara Bhavan, here yesterday, Meti accused the University of being indulged in corruption and irregularities while appointing security guards at the University and demanded immediate measures to ensure the family of the deceased security guard was provided justice.

“The security guards, despite being unwell were being forced to report for work. They were also being denied the rightful leaves. The Varsity Registrar, who promised to provide justice to family, has failed to fulfil the same,” he added.

Meti also alleged that the agencies were claiming the bill amount for 152 security guards while only 120 of them were actually working at the University. Though it was claimed that each of the security guards were paid Rs. 23,000 as monthly salary, they were only being paid a paltry sum of Rs. 12,000.

“The security agency has also dismissed six security guards for participating in the protests held recently,” he said.

Hand in glove

Meti also accused the Security Supervisor and few University officials of being hand in glove with the vested interests, in siphoning crores of rupees from the University coffers. 

Trade union leaders Ugra Narasimhegowda, Narayan, Shivanna, Shivakumar and security guards were present at the press meet.
