Debt-ridden farmer ends life

He had attempted suicide 10 days ago, but succumbs at hospital yesterday

Hunsur: A debt ridden farmer, who had attempted suicide 10 days ago and admitted to a hospital, has breathed his last at the hospital yesterday.

The deceased farmer is Jayannegowda (45), son of Ramegowda of Kanagalu village. He leaves behind his wife and two daughters.

Jayannegowda, who owned 4.39 acre agri land, had taken Rs. 7 lakh loan from a bank and had also taken over Rs. 6 lakh loans from private financiers and firms seven years ago. As he had suffered crop loss, he was unable to repay the loan since then.

Now, Jayannegowda had grown tobacco, maize and ragi crops, which were destroyed in heavy rains. Caught in the whirlpool of debt, Jayannegowda had consumed poison 10 days ago and his family members had admitted him to a hospital where he died yesterday.

Meanwhile, deceased Jayannegowda’s wife Mamata, who has lodged a complaint at Hunsur Rural Police Station has stated in her complaint that since 5-6 months, bank officials and private money lenders were pressurising her husband to repay the money which drove her husband to commit suicide.

Post-mortem was conducted at Hunsur General Hospital. Last rites were held at the farm land in Kanagalu village this morning. Hunsur Rural Inspector Chikkaswamy has registered a case and is investigating.
