Defunct traffic signals across Mysuru city

August 30, 2024

Sir,

Many traffic signals in Mysuru have been non-functional for months. Signals at crucial junctions — such as Vontikoppal Temple Road opposite V.V. Puram Police Station which connects six different roads including KRS Road — have been out of order for an extended period.

When inquired at the local Police Station, we were informed that the tender has expired, and the government has not paid the annual maintenance charges. Consequently, most traffic lights around Mysuru are not working.

Shockingly, despite citizens promptly filing IT returns and paying annual property taxes to the MCC, the Government has failed to allocate necessary funds for critical infrastructure.

Vontikoppal Road is frequented by senior citizens on their walks and children attending a nearby government school. It is also a busy route due to the movement of heavy vehicles such as  KSRTC buses.

Adding to these issues, the havoc caused by speeding vehicles and potholes is well-known. The road has also witnessed accidents recently, following the non-functioning of traffic signals.

Signals at busy junctions must not be treated with such neglect. We do not want another unfortunate incident to occur.

In the 1970s and 80s, all roads in Mysuru were asphalted in time for Dasara. Since 2000, this practice has gradually faded. We urge the Government authorities to act quickly to resolve this issue, especially with Dasara around the corner. Controlling traffic without functioning signals is dangerous.
