Designing a structure

July 30, 2018

Vastu and Feng Shui contain the secret key to realign the home or office in accordance with cosmic principles and natures forces. The effect of solar energy, movement of the celestial spheres influence of the planets, magnetic field of the earth, gravitational forces and the effect of sun and moon have a strong bearing on the well-being of the individual.

Every site and building is said to have life and has to be built to perfect proportions based on certain formulae and calculations. Such a building enhances the feel, energy and contributes to the harmony, wealth, health and happiness of the occupants. The science takes into account the energies radiating from the four compass directions — North, East, South and West and it explains in a simple and effective way the selection of site, construction and design of a residence, condominiums, business premises and placement of rooms, décor in the building.

Often some buildings fail, few structurally, due to failure of foundation and many due to absence of positive energies and bad quality of soil. Investigating the quality of the soil and then deciding on the foundation of the building is an essential part of Feng Shui and Vastu analysis. Hence, in Feng Shui and Vastu one speaks of soil evaluation before any construction begins on a property as this also helps in designing the building and the foundation in accordance with the type of soil existing in the property.

The principles of Vastu can be applied either for an independent house or for apartment dwelling. However, as the building bye-laws laid down by the local Corporations vary from city to city, and the concept of the design and décor differ from individuals, at times it would appear that adapting Vastu would be extremely difficult in any construction.

Some of the essentials of Vastu and Feng Shui principles for constructing a building are:

  • A building is considered auspicious if the length of the property or the building is more than the width. The house should be well proportioned and neither be too long or too wide as the Chi energy needs to permeate into the building and spread across.
  • Avoid property at the intersection of four roads, T-junction or a U-turn as it is considered inauspicious and such properties are said to be afflicted due to the ill-effect of “Poison arrow.”
  • The stairs should be in clockwise direction with the number of steps ODD as they signify continuity and positive spiral energy. Paint staircase in light colours and avoid red and black colour. Ensure that the stairs are well-maintained and repair broken stairs immediately as it signifies clashes and possible bad luck in the future times and accidents. Do not have prayer areas and altar beneath the staircase.
  • The main door to the building represents the mouth, the windows and ventilators represent the eyes, ears and nose, just as the face has two eyes, a nose and a mouth, the main entrance of a house is supposed to possess windows on either side, or a sill or threshold below the doorway. The threshold protects the household from perils, diseases and paves way for prosperity.
