‘Digitalisation leads to boom in media industry’

Mysuru: “Journalism is a different ball game with post internet and digital media. The social networking sites, internet, apps and digital media have  laid a path of rapid development in the field of new era media. Emerging technologies have helped various media platforms to evolve and see their own development,” said senior journalist and retired Senior General Manager, Tata Consultancy, Shamala Padmanabhan.

She was delivering  a lecture on “Print to Digital – The Changing Phase of Media Revolution,” organised by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at SBRR Mahajana First Grade College, Jayalakshmipuram, here recently.

Speaking on the positive effects of digitalisation on media industry and using illustrative examples, Shamala pointed out that technological advance has made it possible for the newer forms of media which has displaced others.

Online journalism has brought lot of exposure to students. Therefore, media persons should get hybrid training for strategic news from new media to the corporate level, she said.

There are many news media avenues like QR Codes, Facebook page, blogging and text messages which can figure out the correct way to use and learn the new media technologies. Broadcasters, digital media and publishers now have wider prospects because digitalisation has spurred the growth of online journalism, she said.

Shamala Padmanabhan called upon the students to minimise the gap between theory and practice. She emphasised the need to improve writing skills and stressed that the knowledge of multiple languages, computers and apps are a pre-requisite for students of Journalism. Her vast experience in the field of journalism enabled the students to have a good interaction session.

CEO and Academic Advisor Dr. S. R. Ramesh, College Principal Dr.  S. Venkataramu, HoD L. Ravi Iyer and Assistant Professor Keshava Murthy were present on the occasion.
