Do not shrink 80 ft. roads with concrete slabs

April 4, 2026

Sir,

Recently, I observed that the main road in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, connecting Dattagalli on the eastern side and the Ring Road on the western side, has been altered by the erection of concrete slabs at the centre of the road, thereby narrowing what was once a wide stretch.

Instead of easing traffic flow, this arrangement has effectively reduced the 80-ft.-wide road to about 40 ft., with roughly 20 ft. available on either side.

Another example of this can be seen on Marimallappa’s Road in Vijayanagar 4th Stage, 2nd Phase. Mysureans have long enjoyed travelling on wide roads, which have significantly improved driving conditions.

Instead of installing permanent concrete slabs in the middle of 80-ft. roads, the city planning authorities could consider marking the roads clearly in accordance with traffic rules — such as white centre lines, dotted lines, yellow lines and stop markings. Such painted signals would help create awareness among motorists about traffic discipline while preserving the full width of these roads as originally planned.

I request the elected representatives and Government authorities to look into this issue and put an end to the practice of erecting medians on wide roads.
