KR Traffic Police conducting drunken-driving checks in city yesterday night.

Special checking from Dec. 24 to 30

Mysore/Mysuru: In a bid to reduce road accident fatalities due to driving and riding vehicles under the influence of alcohol, the City Traffic Police will be conducting special checking drives against drunk and driving across the city from today (Dec. 24) till Dec. 30.

City Police Commissioner Seema Latkar, in a press release, has warned motorists that drunk driving is a punishable offence under Section 185 of Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and includes a fine of Rs. 10,000 and / or imprisonment for up to six months. Also, Driving Licences (DLs) of repeated offenders will be suspended by Regional Transport Authority (RTA) for three months or more or even permanently, depending on severity of offence. Offenders will be dealt with penal Sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Also, minors are strictly prohibited from riding and driving any motor vehicle. Vehicle owners, parents or guardians, who permit minors to drive vehicles, will be prosecuted as per law.

This special drive is in addition to routine traffic regulation and enforcement, which is being conducted to promote traffic discipline, the City Police Commissioner stated.
