This refers to the front page report about the burning of dry leaves by house owners (Star of Mysore dated Feb.8). You also carried a remark attributed to the Mayor stating that notices will be issued to residents who have dry leaves accumulated in their sites and also burn the leaves to get rid of them.
I am a resident of Ramakrishnanagar in city. Twenty years ago when we built our house the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) encouraged all site owners to plant trees like honge in front of our sites and houses. This was a suggestion which many people took up. We have planted two trees on either side of our gate by the roadside. The trees have now grown and provide welcome shade in the hot season.
During this season the trees shed dry leaves profusely and we are unable to get rid of the leaves. The leaves fly around on the wind all over the road and the compound. During the previous two years the Pourakarmikas who come to collect the daily garbage used to collect the dry leaves on selected days of the week. Now they have stopped doing so saying the work is to be done by someone else. In order to keep the surroundings tidy some of my neighbours have started burning the daily collection of dry leaves.
I would be grateful if MCC can offer a way to collect and dispose off the dry leaves from each house. Threatening people with notices and fines will not help solve a problem that affects everyone’s health and the cleanliness of our surroundings.
