Mysore/Mysuru: Maintaining that education in our country nowadays is limited to just teaching lessons, noted educationist and Orator Dr. Gururaj Karajagi regretted that our education had failed in teaching culture and human values.
He was speaking on the topic ‘Shikshana – Dhanatmaka Chinthanegalu, Manaviya Moulyagalu’ on the concluding day of the 6th Mysuru Literature Festival here yesterday.
Expressing concerns over the increasing trend of young students taking out their lives because of their failure in SSLC or PUC exams, Dr. Karajagi said that the purpose of imparting education is getting defeated as it seems there is lack of confidence among the educated. This is primarily because that we have leaned towards Marxism, he noted.
Likening the parents of current generation of children to race horses, Dr. Karajagi opined that there is a growing trend of parents taking pride in sending their wards to prestigious schools and colleges.
Pointing out that one must remember that great personalities like Dr. Abdul Kalam achieved big though they did not study in any prestigious institution, he wondered what the parents would achieve only from the high score marks card of their children.
Stressing on the need for educating children with positive thoughts and human values, Dr. Karajagi quoted Saint John, the first century follower of Jesus Christ, who had advocated treating everyone around us with love and affection.
Following his message, the population then lead a life based on love and affection. But with the passage of time, things got deteriorated and now we are living in a situation where everything is split — both geographically and as well in terms of language, caste, creed, religion, race etc. Saint John’s message, if included in the current system of education, will largely help in building a better and responsive society, he added.
Earlier, in the session titled ‘Kannada Sahityadalli Vignana Mattu Niguda Veerappan,’ Dr. D.V. Gururprasad’s work ‘Dantakatheyada Danta Chora Veerappan’ (story based on forest brigand Veerappan) and writer Dr. Prasanna Santhekadur’s work ‘Su’ (a scientific book focusing on Uterus Cancer) were discussed.In the next session titled ‘Innastu bekenna hrudayakke rama, Manemanagallannu mutti Marugisuva Sahitya Seve,’ Gajanana Sharma’s book titled ‘Chennabyra Devi’ (on administration of Rani Chennabyra Devi) was discussed.
