Mysuru: Consumers in city have been shelling out more to buy eggs, a staple in many homes. Egg prices are touching a new high that too in the month of Kartika, when the prices are supposed to drop as the consumption is low. The wholesale rates stand between Rs. 560 to Rs. 600 for 100 eggs and retail prices range from Rs.6 to Rs. 7 per egg.
A leading wholesale dealer in Devaraja Market told Star of Mysore that the reason for the rising prices of eggs is because the production has come down and the supply from major egg producing centres like Hospet and Namakkal (Andhra Pradesh) has come down, thus hurting the local market.
He said that normally during Kartika month, rates of eggs drop. But this is the first time due to shortage, prices have gone up during this month.
