Elections to two Co-operative Banks held but vote counting withheld

January 20, 2025

Mysuru: The city on Sunday saw elections to two prime Co-operative Banks of Mysuru — The Mysore Co-operative Bank at Gandhi Square and The Mysore Merchants Co-operative Bank on Jaganmohan Palace Road.

While the polling to elect the Board of Directors of Mysore Co-operative Bank was held from 9 am to 4 pm at Dasara Exhibition Grounds, the voting for Merchants Co-operative Bank took place at Alamma Choultry in Shivarampet.

However, the counting of votes polled in respect of both the Banks, which was to be taken up soon after the voting ended, has been withheld due to a Court stay. The ballot boxes, which were sealed soon after the polling hours ended, were shifted to the District Treasury for safe custody.

The polls were held to elect 12 Directors (one Director has been elected unopposed in both banks) each in both the Banks. While 39 candidates contested in the Mysore Co-operative Bank polls for 12 seats, 21 candidates contested for the 12 seats in Mysore Merchants Co-operative Bank.

Out of the 13,500 electoral strength of Mysore Co-operative Bank, as many as 10,721 members exercised their franchise, while 3,704 out of the 4,448 members of Merchants Co-operative Bank cast their vote.

The Dasara Exhibition Grounds, where the election to the Mysore Co-operative Bank was held, wore a similar look to any Legislative Assembly polls, with a large number of people seen all around the venue.

However, the scene around Alamma Choultry seemed to be less buzzing, with fewer number of people seen around the venue.
