Encroachment of public property and official apathy

Sir,

This refers to the news item titled “MCC launches Rajakaluve encroachment clearance drive from Bogadi Lake” (SOM dated Oct.29).

Looks like the MCC woke up from its deep slumber only after a flooding and the death of one person. Is it not the duty of the MCC to govern the city and make sure lakes and public property are not encroached?

If you go around the city, es-pecially Sayyaji Rao Road, there is encroachment everywhere. Public property (balustrades)  is destroyed; Potholes and garbage all over; Streetlights not working; Pedestrian crossings not maintained; Policing not good; Tax collection is bad; Crores of rupees spent on decorations when the priority should be on road maintenance and cleanliness.

Fibre-Optic and DTH cables strung from light poles and trees instead of going underground. What a mess our city is in? And why this official apathy?
