Evening showers bring relief for many, misery for some

Mysuru: As predicted by the Indian Meteorological Department, it rained again in Mysuru yesterday evening and it was accompanied by lightning and thundershowers. While the showers provided some relief to Mysureans from the searing heat, it brought misery to several residents who had to battle water-logging, tree falling and power cuts.

Several people who were returning home from their workplaces were caught unawares as it started pouring at around 6.30 pm. While those having four-wheelers managed to reach home without getting drenched, the plight of two-wheeler riders and pedestrians was worse. They either had to stop at bus shelters or in front of shops to avoid getting drenched or wade their way through the traffic rush amidst wind and rain, jostling for space.

showers bring relief for many, misery for some dents were also reported from Muneshwaranagar 7th Cross, Hebbal Telephone Exchange, C.V. Road Hanumanthanagar, Jyothi Nagar, Narayana Shastry Road, Raghavendraswamy Mutt near Shanthala Theatre, Kesare and Naidunagar.

Trees crashed on electric poles at several areas including Ramakrishnanagar, Madhuvana and Jayalakshmipuram, plunging the areas into darkness. Traffic flow was disrupted in these areas as Abhaya teams from the Mysuru City Corporation had to clear the fallen poles and trees.

Several low-lying areas including Bannimantap, Madhuvana, Jyothi Nagar Police Quarters and Subhash Nagar were water-logged. Drains and culverts overflowed and rainwater entered several houses. Roads including Valmiki Road at Vinayak Nagar and the roads near Kuvempunagar Apollo BGS Hospital were blocked as rainwater flowed from all sides, bringing traffic to a grinding halt.

Gallons of water gushed into Vijaya Bank on the Vishvamanava Double Road soaking records that were piled up inside the rooms. Several files and records were destroyed and Saraswathipuram Fire Brigade officers had to drain out the water.

A major accident was averted at Durga Bhavan Hotel at Gokulam where rainwater had entered the switch board that resulted in fire. Fire service personnel rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire after disconnecting power supply.
