Expert talk on ‘Facebook Capitalism,’ ‘Business Intelligence’ at MYRA

August 10, 2017

Mysuru: MYRA School of Business had organised a lecture programme at its premises in Yelwal recently.

The lecture titled ‘Facebook Capitalism: Straddling between ideals and frailties of the human condition’ was delivered by Dr. Yasmin Ibrahim, Reader in International Business and Communications, Queen Mary University of London School of Business and Management and a Visiting Professor to MYRA.

Known as a consummate researcher, Dr. Yasmin, in her talk, explored the notion of ‘Facebook Capitalism’ where there is pervasive production of value through human agency luring us into a world of communion,  empowerment and self-representation.

Dr.Yasmin argued that it is this ‘Facebook Capitalism’ while leveraging on the lure of the ideals, extracts value through the commodification of human as data, audiences and as content creators on the Web.

She said that these human conditions where we see ourselves mirrored and captured through screen cultures and the insatiable appetite to consume ourselves and others on the screen have become an integral part of our vulnerability in post modernity; One which works for the servitude of a networked, self-commodifying, data-driven and value-based Facebook Capitalism.

Tech Talk on ‘Business Intelligence & Analytics’

The 6th EnVision Tech Talk titled ‘Business Intelligence & Business Analytics’ was also held at MYRA recently.

The talk was delivered by Dr. H. Raghav Rao, AT&T Distinguished Chair in Infrastructure Assurance and Security with the University of Texas at San Antonio and a Visiting Faculty at MYRA.

The crux of Dr. Rao’s talk centred on a fact that the 21st century was being regarded as the age of data, information  overload and in search of insights. It is estimated that the world would soon reach more than 35 zettabytes of data. Big data is on top of the mind for virtually every industry — from healthcare to financial services to retail and the appetite for data and insights is ever-increasing with time.
