Mysuru: “AYURDENTOCON -2024”, a National Conference on ‘Oro-Dental Diseases: An Integrated Approach’ was jointly organised by the Department of Post Graduate Studies in Shalakya Tantra, JSS Ayurveda Medical College, Mysuru and JSS Dental College, Mysuru, in commemoration of 109th Jayanthi celebration of Dr. Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Swamiji at Sri Rajendra Centenary Auditorium, JSS Hospital, Mysuru, recently.
Dr. Sarbeswar Kar, Principal, JSS Ayurveda Medical College, Mysuru, explained about the objectives of the conference and the need for collaborative researches.
Oral hygiene
Chief guest Arvind Varchaswi, Managing Director, Sri Sri Tattva, Bengaluru, spoke about the importance of oral hygiene in the present era.
He also emphasised that the health of an individual is highly dependent on the food habits. Intake of fast food, unhygienic food and other adulterated foods, adversely affects the health of teeth, gums and oral cavity. Hence, it is necessary that one should adopt healthy food habits and follow regular brushing of the teeth and oral pulling/gargling with medicated oils or decoctions.
Dr. B. Manjunatha, Registrar, JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research (JSS AHER), Mysuru, emphasised the importance of different medical systems coming together in providing better healthcare for the humankind which will lead to a healthier and happier society.
He also opined that good oro-dental hygiene can prevent many of the prevailing diseases.
Dr. M.R. Dhakshaini, Principal, JSS Dental College, Mysuru, welcomed the gathering at the inaugural ceremony.
Dr. Gavimath Shivanand, Organising Secretary of Ayurdentocon-2024, proposed the vote of thanks.
Scientific sessions of the conference began with the keynote address by Dr. M.R. Dhakshaini, who emphasised on the oral health and ayurveda opportunities and explained about the possibilities and challenges for collaborative researches.
Oral ulcers, gum diseases
First scientific session was by Dr. S. Suhas, Professor and HoD, Oral Medicine and Radiology, Sri Siddhartha Dental College, Tumakuru.
He spoke about ayurvedic approaches in oral care and shared his experiences from a decade of practice. He highlighted the interventions like herbal mouth rinses, oil pulling etc., in the management of oral ulcers and other gum diseases.
Ayurvedic products
The second scientific session was delivered by Dr. Rajesh Srinivasan, Director (Production), Sadvaidyasala Pvt. Ltd., Nanjangud.
He provided an overview about the ayurvedic products available in the management of oral health.
Various ayurvedic decoctions, tablets, medicated oils and other formularies that are used in oro-dental care were analysed and explained.
Ayurveda procedures
In the third scientific session, Dr. J. Vivek, Professor, Department of PG Studies in Shalya Tantra, Sri Sri College of Ayurvedic Science & Research (SSCASR), Bengaluru, explained in detail about various oro-dental cases managed by ayurveda procedures and medications.
He also shared his experiences in managing oral carcinoma cases. He demonstrated with videos, the technique of painless tooth extraction without anaesthesia, by the application of Jalandhara Bandha Yoga.
Oral health practices
Final scientific session was delivered by Dr. Sarbeswar Kar, who critically analysed and presented the evolution of oral health practices from past to present.
He conveyed about various therapeutic procedures and its benefits in Oral health care like Dantadhavana, Pratisarana, Kavala and Gandusha. The session also included practical demonstration and standardisation of ayurvedic therapeutic procedures.
140 delegates
Scientific papers and posters were presented by 140 delegates including Under Graduates, Post Graduates, Ph.D scholars and faculty of Ayurveda and Dental Colleges.
In the valedictory ceremony, chief guest Dr. C.P. Madhu, Medical Director (I/C), JSS Hospital, Mysuru, distributed awards to the best scientific presentations across various categories.
About 600 delegates participated in the National Conference from different districts of Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra and Gujarat.
