Hunsur: A farmer, who had requested the Manager of Karnataka Bank in Hunsur to provide him a part of money from his tobacco crop, attempted suicide by consuming poison in the Bank premises after the Bank Manager reportedly failed to respond to his request.
The farmer, who attempted suicide, has been identified as 41-year-old Suresh, son of Swamy Gowda and a resident of Thiplapura village in the taluk. He has been admitted to K.R. Hospital in Mysuru.
Suresh’s father Swamy Gowda had obtained a crop loan of Rs. 7.5 lakh from Karnataka Bank in Hunsur and had grown tobacco crop. After selling the crop, the Tobacco Board had deposited Rs. 1.25 lakh into his Bank account, it is learnt. Yesterday, Suresh who went to the Bank, requested the Bank Manager to provide Rs. 20,000 from the amount deposited in the account as he had to maintain the family besides asking the Manager to credit the remaining amount for the loan taken.
But the Manager, who did not respond to his request, told him that the amount deposited in the account will be taken as the first instalment for the crop loan besides telling him that he cannot give the amount.
Depressed over this, Suresh, who came out of the Bank, purchased a bottle of pesticide at a nearby pesticide and fertilizer shop and consumed it in the Bank premises. Soon, he collapsed and began to writhe in pain. The public, who saw Suresh writhing in pain, rushed him to a hospital nearby, where he was provided first-aid and was later shifted to K.R. Hospital in Mysuru for further treatment. Suresh’s condition is said to be critical, according to Police. Hunsur Town Police have registered a case and are investigating.
