Farmer commits suicide

May 29, 2018

Periyapatna:  A 42-year-old farmer, unable to repay debts he had borrowed from the bank and private financiers, committed suicide by consuming pesticides at his house yesterday.

The deceased farmer has been identified as Somashekar, son of Ningegowda and a resident of Senabinakuppe village in the taluk. Somashekar was working as a waterman at Komalapura Gram Panchayat, it is learnt.

Somashekar had obtained a loan of Rs. 7 lakh from Cauvery Grameena Bank and Rs. 3 lakh from private financiers to grow maize and other crops in his field.

As the crops did not yield to his expectations and unable to repay the loans he had taken, Somashekar ended his life by consuming pesticides, according to the complaint lodged by his wife Sujatha. Somashekar leaves behind his wife, one daughter and one son.

Periyapatna Police, who have registered a case in this regard, are investigating.
