Farmers oppose Cauvery order

Farmers staging a dharna in front of Sir M. Visvesvaraya statue in Mandya to register their protest against Cauvery Water Management Authority order asking Karnataka to release water to Tamil Nadu.

Mandya:  Soon after the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) asked Karnataka to release water to Tamil Nadu, farmers under the banner of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) staged a Rasta Roko at Mandya in protest against the CWMA order to release 9.19 tmcft of water to Tamil Nadu on Tuesday.

The farmers blocked the busy Mysuru-Bengaluru Highway in front of Sir M. Visvesvaraya statue for sometime, to register their protest.

Terming the CWMA decision as unscientific, the protesters maintained that the order was an onslaught on farmers who are already reeling under severe drought and farm crisis.

Maintaining that the order was catastrophic to the State, the protesters urged the Authority to withdraw the order.

The agitators were led by KRRS Mandya District President Shamboonahalli Suresh and other office-bearers.
