Mysore/Mysuru: Nammooru Nammoru Samaja Seva Trust celebrated the 106th birth anniversary of Dr. M.H. Marigowda, the Father of Horticulture, at Jaladarshini Guest House premises here on Aug. 8.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA L. Nagendra said that Dr. Marigowda showed a new way of gaining financial freedom by introducing horticulture to farmers who were till then dependent on agricultural produce for their income.
“He was responsible for Karnataka attaining the status of Horticulture Hub. Dr. Marigowda had his primary school education in Bannur, completed his Science graduation in Central College, Bengaluru and obtained his PG from Lucknow University. Later, he was given Doctorate by America’s Harvard University. Prior to our independence, he worked as the Assistant Superintendent at Lalbagh in Bengaluru,” he added.
Dr. Marigowda had worked tirelessly in the field of horticulture until 1977 when he retired. In recognition of his work, the Government of Karnataka gave him the title, ‘Totagarika Ratna’ in 1993. His birthday is also celebrated as ‘Horticulture Day’. KEA Chairman M. Srinivasagowda, Trust President Satishgowda, Secretary A. Ravi, Corporators Chikkavenkatu, Prameela Bharath and others were present.
