Felicitation to Prof. S.L. Belagali at Gangothri tomorrow

Mysuru: The Department of Studies (DoS) in Environmental Science, University of Mysore (UoM), has organised felicitation to Prof. S.L. Belagali on attainment of Superannuation at Rani Bahadur auditorium, Manasagangothri, at 4 pm tomorrow (May 27).

UoM Registrar Prof. Lingaraja Gandhi will preside. Former UoM VC Prof. S.N. Hegde and former Kuvempu University VC Prof. B.S. Sherigara will be the chief guests on the occasion.

Profile: Prof. S.L. Belagali, born to agriculturalist family of Lagamappa Belagali and Honnamma Belagali on 1.6.1957 at Kabbur in Chikodi of Belagavi, holds M.Sc degree in Organic Chemistry (1981) from Karnatak University, Dharwad and Ph.D Degree (1992) from Southampton University, England, in the field of Natural Products Chemistry, under the guidance of Prof. Philip J. Kocienski.

He was in Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru (1981-82) for one-and-a-half years as a Research Scholar. He has more than 37 years of experience in Teaching and Research with 188 Research papers, 469 citations, with h-index 13, as of now. He is a recognised research guide in Chemistry and Environmental Science. So far, 18 candidates have obtained Ph.D in Chemistry and Environmental Science and four candidates have obtained M.Phil Degree. At present, three Research Scholars are working for Ph.D under his supervision.

Prof. Belagali was recipient of Government of Karnataka Scholarship for getting first class at the first attempt for Master’s degree in 1981 (Organic Chemistry). He was also a 6th Rank holder to Dharwad University in 1979, for the B.Sc Degree. Later in 1988, he got the prestigious ‘National Overseas Scholarship for Study Abroad’ (leading to Ph.D degree) awarded by Government of India.

He completed six research projects funded by national and international organisations/institutions and visited USA three times for attending conferences and Chairing the sessions. Prof. Belagali, was the local Secretary for Environmental Science section of Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA) held in Mysuru during 2016.

Prof. Belagali did the confidential works of KPSC, UGC, UPSC, CSIR, NCERT, CFTRI, Odisha Public Service Commission, etc.

He worked as the Registrar (Administration) of Rani Channamma University, Belagavi, for one-and-a-half years.

Prof. Belagali was the Academic Council Member of Mysore University during 1999 to 2002 and once again, September 2017 till date. In recognition of his illustrious service for the past three-and-a-half decades at Mangalore and Mysore Universities, a gold medal will be instituted in his name at the University of Mysore.
