Final deadline ends: Abandoned vehicles still remain

Mysuru: The Mysuru City Corporation’s (MCC) final deadline to clear hundreds of abandoned vehicles lying rusting along city roadsides has passed, but the vehicles remain where they are, with no sign of the promised towing operation.

The sight of rusting and abandoned vehicles scattered across the city is a cause of embarrassment for tourists visiting Mysuru. Similarly, scrap and abandoned vehicles have remained on roadsides in areas such as  Bannimantap for years, inconveniencing motorists and affecting the city’s appearance.

MCC Commissioner M.K. Savitha had fixed Sept. 12 as the final deadline for owners to remove the vehicles, which have occupied public road space for years, obstructing traffic flow. She had warned that vehicles not removed by the deadline would be towed away from Sept. 13.

However, even after the deadline expired, no visible action has been taken. The abandoned vehicles continue to occupy roadside spaces, raising questions over the MCC’s enforcement of its own order.

Hundreds of such vehicles are scattered across the city, with some reportedly having remained in the same spots for more than a decade. Besides occupying parking space, they obstruct pedestrians and cause inconvenience to motorists.

Taking note of the problem, Savitha personally launched a drive by pasting notices on abandoned vehicles between Aug. 25 and 31.

Owners were asked to remove the vehicles within the stipulated period. The Commissioner had warned that the towing charges would be recovered from the owners, she said.

She had also warned that vehicles would be auctioned if owners failed to pay the fines and reclaim them within the prescribed period. With the deadline now over and the vehicles still in place, citizens have questioned the Corporation’s failure to follow through on the warning.

MCC Commissioner Savitha’s initial drive against abandoned vehicles had raised expectations among Mysureans that the long-pending problem would finally be addressed. The lack of action after the final deadline, however, has left citizens questioning whether the MCC will actually act on its warning.
