Mysuru: Mysore Literary Association (MLA) has organised a ‘Book Talk’ by former Mysuru City Police Commissioner C. Chandrashekar on June 24 at Cauvery First Grade College in Kuvempunagar here at 10.30 am.
The book he will be discussing on is titled ‘Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow’ by international best-selling author Y.N. Harari.
Keen student of History
Chandrashekar, himself a keen student of history, feels that a new study of the subject, especially by historians, who are also academicians is very important.
“One of the subjects that have engaged my mind ever since I was a student is how we were taught history. I do not know if it is any different now. In school, the history teacher was never your favourite. You did not look forward to his classes. We were taught history as set of dead facts. The approach was never that it was a live thing. History is such a powerful force that it influences not only the present but it also shapes your future. It is NEVER a DEAD subject. But our teachers never saw such bright sparks in the subject,” said Chandrashekar, speaking to Star of Mysore.
Fortunately, Historians like Harari, ask uncomfortable and quite often questions that had never been asked before. What is relationship between history and biology? What is the essential difference between Homo Sapiens and other animals? Is there justice in history? Did people become happier as history unfolded?, he said.
Brief Profile of Harari
Yuval Noah Harari born on February 26, 1976 is an Israeli Historian and is a tenured Professor in the Department of History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He was awarded a Ph.D from Oxford University in 2002. He has specialised in World History and Medieval History. He is also the author of ‘Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind.’
