Former Mayor seeks Police cover for Abhaya Task Force

Mysuru: Former Mayor Sandesh Swamy has urged the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) to strengthen its Abhaya Task Force and ensure the safety of its personnel.

In a press release, he condemned the recent attack on Abhaya personnel who were removing unauthorised flex boards and advertisement hoardings. Though the assault is said to have stemmed from a misunderstanding, such incidents have created fear among MCC staff and affected their work, he said.

Swamy demanded strict legal action against those responsible for the attack and measures to prevent a recurrence.

Recalling discussions on the functioning of the Abhaya Task Force during earlier council meetings, he said the contract staff engaged to remove illegal flex boards, hoardings and footpath encroachments had no security cover.

It was decided that the teams should work under the supervision of an Assistant Engineer-level officer, he said. The MCC currently spends Rs. 9 lakh a month on managing three Abhaya teams. Over the past 15 years, nearly Rs. 15 crore has been paid to contractors, he said.

Swamy suggested that the MCC purchase three vehicles at a one-time cost of Rs. 40 lakh to Rs. 50 lakh, which could be used for at least 15 years. He also called for appointing permanent staff to work directly under the supervision of an officer.

In addition, he urged the MCC to requisition the services of an Assistant Sub-Inspector and two Police personnel to provide security to the task force.
