Mysuru: Kuvempunagar Police have registered a case against the owner of Mohan Jewellers for allegedly cheating his customers to the tune of lakhs of rupees.
The case has been registered against Mohan Lal, Proprietor of Mohan Jewellers at Vivekanandanagar. Mohan had floated a gold scheme offering gold jewellery and had collected lakhs of rupees from his customers. He had offered an instalment scheme where customers had to pay for 15 months for which two months bonus was offered from the jewellery store.
According to the complaint lodged by Mukul Hemaraj Thavare, a resident of RMP Layout in Vijayanagar 4th Stage in city, he and his father, natives of Nagpur came to Mysuru as his father, an employee of RMP, was transferred to Mysuru.
Upon their arrival to Mysuru, they initially took a house on rent at Aravindanagar where they resided for three years. During their stay at Aravindanagar, Mukul had come to know about Mohan Jewellers at Vivekanandanagar during which Mohal Lal showed him a card pertaining to gold saving scheme and had told him that if he paid instalments of Rs. 500 or more per month for 15 months, the jewellery shop would give two months bonus.
Believing him, Mukul began to pay Rs. 12,000 per month starting from Sept. 4, 2025. On paying the first instalment, Mohan Lal had duly signed the instalment card. Till Aug. 1, 2026, Mukul has paid 12 instalments amounting to Rs. 1,44,000 through Google Pay from his SBI account.
On Aug. 29, when he went to the jewellery store to get the amount entered in the instalment card, he found the jewellery store closed and on enquiry, he came to know that the shop was closed since a week. He also heard from a few people who had gathered there that Mohan Lal had collected money from them too. When he enquired, they told him that they had also enrolled for the instalment scheme and had paid the instalments to Mohan Lal besides stating that Mohan Lal’s phone was switched off.
Realising that Mohan Lal had fled with the money, Mukul lodged a complaint at Kuvempunagar Police Station.
Based on the complaint, Kuvempunagar Police swung into action and arrested Mohan Lal near his jewellery shop at about 10.30 pm yesterday and have launched a hunt to nab his son, who is absconding.
