Bengaluru: The Hanur temple tragedy has brought to the fore lack of quality checks being done during mass distribution of food at temples, which are neither under the control of the government nor established temple managements.

The Kichugutti Maramma temple incident is attributed to personal rivalry between two sets of temple managements running Maramma temples in Chamarajanagar and in Baragur, Tamil Nadu.

“Bringing these temples under the government is not viable as it will cost the exchequer heavily. However, there is a proposal under consideration to keep a check on the quality of prasadam at these unorganised temples across the State,” said a government official.

Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy is said to have alerted his office about the need to monitor food distribution system where temple authorities do not have resources to do so. “He said the proposal to have a quality check on food distribution in such temples is being examined,” he said.

Muzrai Minister Rajashekar Patil reiterated that Maramma temple is not under their control and the department cannot interfere in the matter. Asked whether the department does routine checks at its temples, he said a circular will be issued. “I will instruct the temple authorities to do quality checks,” he said.
