Sir,
Mysore Vasudevacharya’s House on New Sayyaji Rao Road in Agrahara, Mysuru, is the Kashi for musicians where they render concerts. It is now a heritage building and given free of cost by the descendants of the late Karnatak Music Maestro Mysore Vasudevacharya.
It is a simple partly tiled house on the busy Sayyaji Rao Road. Mysore Vasudevacharya had received the patronage of Mysore Royal Family. He had great many compositions which include them in Telugu and Sanskrit. He had also studied at Mysore Sanskrit College.
He was born in the Kingdom of Mysore on May 28, 1865 and passed away on May 17, 1961 at ripe age of 96 years. He had his initial training under the Palace Asthana Vidwan Veena Padmanabhiah and subsequently with Patnam Subramanya Iyer with the patronage of Mysore Royals. He also worked at Kalakshetra at the request of Rukmini Devi Arundale. Even his grandsons were accomplished Musicians.
His grandson S. Rajaram worked at Kalakshetra and took charge of it and completed the work started by his grandfather. Another grandson S. Krishnamurthy became Station Director of All India Radio. He was also awarded Padma Bhushan. He had presided over the Music Conference at Music Academy in Chennai.
I had the privilege of listening to the concert of Dr. Saroja and Dr. Sujata on Dec. 7, 2024 and it was very soothing at the Mysore Vasudevacharya’s House. Music weekend concerts are a regular feature at this house. I was also lucky to meet his great grandson’s grandson Vasu who had come on vacation from Sweden.
The Government should extend support and ensure that the heritage house is restored and free electric connection is provided to this great accomplished singer’s house for the benefit of all music-lovers. Star of Mysore provides news about the holding of concerts in Mysuru.
