Govt. vehicles older than 15 years to be scrapped

December 20, 2025

Belagavi: The Karnataka Government is contemplating introducing a policy similar to the one being implemented in Delhi, under which Government vehicles older than 15 years will be scrapped.

Accordingly, vehicles that are over 15 years old and currently being used by various Government Departments, Corporations, Boards, City Municipal Councils and other Government institutions will be phased out.

Transport Minister R. Ramalinga Reddy said that the State Government had approved the scrapping of such vehicles at Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facilities (RVSFs) established in the State on Sept. 12 this year.

Replying to a question raised by MLC Govind Raju during the Winter Session of the Legislature in the Legislative Council, the Minister said that the registration of a total of 18,552 Government vehicles older than 15 years (excluding Transport Corporation buses) had been cancelled by the Central Government on the VAHAN portal.

“Of these 18,552 vehicles, 1,493 have already been scrapped, while the remaining 17,059 vehicles are yet to be scrapped,” he said.

The Minister further stated that 3,212 vehicles belonging to the four State Transport Corporations — Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) and North East Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NEKRTC) — have been suspended from operation, while another 579 vehicles are yet to be condemned.
