Mysore/Mysuru: Marking HFI Founder’s Day celebration, the State Blood Cell, Health and Family Welfare Department, District Hospital and Mysore Haemophilia Society, had organised Haemophilia Factor Assay and Inhibitor Screening for Haemophilia patients at the District Hospital on KRS road here yesterday.
District Surgeon Dr. H.R. Rajeshwari Devi inaugurated the programme by offering floral tributes to the portrait of Ashok Verma, the Founder of Haemophilia Society and lighting the lamp.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Rajeshwari said Haemophilia is a rare disorder in which the blood does not clot in the typical way, because it does not have enough blood clotting proteins (clotting factors). A severe form of the condition is bleeding inside the body, especially in knees, ankles and elbows. Internal bleeding can damage organs and tissues and be life-threatening, she said.
Pointing out that Haemophilia is almost always a genetic disorder, she said that treatment includes regular replacement of the specific clotting factor that is reduced. Newer therapies that don’t contain clotting factors are also being used, she added.
Marking the celebration, a Continued Medical Education (CME) on Haemophilia Management was also held. It featured sessions on Judicial use of Factor as per Guidelines, Comprehensive Blood Disorder Rehabilitation Centre, an overview and Genetic counselling for Blood Disorder Patients.
District TB Officer Dr. Siraj Ahmed, District Hospital RMO Dr. Nayaz Pasha, JSS Hospital Genetic Counsellor Dr. Deepa Bhat, Mysore Haemophilia Society President and HFI National Member Dr. S.K. Mittal and others were present.
